Hermit Tutorial Part 1
Dec. 22nd, 2018 05:37 amSo I see a lot of people clamouring for a mobile app for Dreamwidth and here's something to tide you over until we get better mobile functionality.
Now Apple lovers I've got to be upfront with you, I think you're stuck with Safari's Add to Homescreen feature. For Android users though, there's Hermit.
This set up tutorial features AO3 because I'm too lazy to login to Dreamwidth, but the process is the same since they're not available as pre-made lite apps.
1.Download a nice version of the icon on the internet. The app gets the website default (and Dreamwidth's is lovely btw) but sometimes it can look horribly pixelated.
2.Copy the URL of the website you want. Then go to Hermit and tap on Create Your Own. Paste URL into the bar and tap enter.
3.The website should appear! Now Tap on Name your Lite App way down there.
4.Alright, we're almost done! See what I told you about some sites having horribly pixelated icons? So select your icon from where you saved it, change the name if you want and tap Create!
5.Profit! Tap those 3 circles by the icon you want and select Add to Homescreen
Now for Dreamwidth specifically I can't remember if I used the mobile site but I'd generally recommend you use the mobile version of any site, if available. I link to my Reading Page specifically, because I really only want to check on activity on mobile, but you can link to Home or Latest Things or even a comm!
Part 2 will be about the things you can do with it.
*Edit: I am adding a text area with a link for easy sharing as suggested in one of
potofsoup suggestions for reblog alternatives. In a way, you're also achieving Pillowfort's "opt to reblog" function because you have to manually add the text box for the link.
